Pre-Winter-Hibernation Update

2024 –Utopian and Dystopian Non-Fiction & Progress on the Singularity Loading Bar

Dear readers,

Before I retreat for a couple of weeks of winter hibernation, I wanted to share one final update for 2024 on my blog. And what a year it has been! As global tensions rise and temperatures climb, public discourse becomes ever more heated and polarized. At the same time, we’ve witnessed progress in many areas that could shape our future.

Throughout the year, I did my best to keep track of all the dystopian and utopian non-fiction happening around us, and update you on the latest developments in tech — from AI to quantum computing — both here on my blog and over at DaniWeb.com. Meanwhile, I also worked to improve my understanding of growing social divisions and closely followed the developments surrounding the German skeptics’ organization, GWUP, as a ‘case study’. You can read more about this in part 1, part 2, and part 3 of my article series at Skeptical Inquirer.

This autumn, I had a little less time for writing and publishing articles, but you might still enjoy these eerie (and not always lighthearted) tech stories or my write-up on creating a program with ChatGPT after years of barely writing any code. For those running an online business or working in SEO, I recommend my article on creatively using LLMs for SEO. As of today, a German-language Deep Dive on the same topic is also available, and with some luck, your browser will translate it for you…

Lastly, in the spirit of the season, here’s a repost of my article on how a commercialized Christmas experience harms our health, planet, and mental well-being alike; along with a poem I discovered in John Brunner’s borderline-prophetic 1972 novel The Sheep Look Up:

After a short winter break, many exciting new projects await. Be sure to check back here soon to stay updated!

Wishing you happy holidays, all the best for the new year, and—should the singularity arise in 2025—a peaceful coexistence with our robot overlords 😉

Best wishes,
J.C. Zeller
